Schoenmaker, Klaas March 14, 1930 – October 30, 2016.
Klaas died peacefully at the Golden Plough Lodge on October 30, 2016. Klaas was born on March 14, 1930 in The Beemster, The Netherlands, served in the Dutch Air Force from 1948 to 1951 married his"lieve schat" Lamberdina (Dini) van der Spruit-Schoenmaker in February 1953 and immigrated to Canada in April 1953. Klaas is survived by his loving wife Dini, their three children Yvonne (Frank) Maitland, Janet (John) Standeven and Brian (Shari) Schoenmaker as well as his grandchildren, Justin (Amy), Jessica, Colin, Jenette, Heather, Sarah (Mitch), Veronica (Stephen) and Kevin and great grandchildren Amelia and Jensen . He was a dear brother to the late Greta Ates, Jan and Willem Schoenmaker and survived by his sister Alydia Bakker. He is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews both in Canada and in The Netherlands.
Klaas retired as a supervisor from General Motors in 1986, was initiated in the Orono Masonic Lodge in 1965, Worshipful Master (74), District Deputy Grand Master of Ontario District (93) 32 Degree Member of the Scottish Rite Masonary and was Trustee of Orono United Church, member of Clarke Twp Committee of Adjustment, President of Orono Fish and Hunt Club, Director of Orono Cemetery Board, Chairman of Orono Parks Committee, Director of Durham Seniors Citizens Board and a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was passionate about dogs, books, learning, debates, recreational flying, being captain of his sailboats, camping in Algonquin Park, traveling and visits to his many relatives overseas and enjoyed a good single malt scotch.

Friends may pay their respects at the Morris Funeral Chapel 4 Division St, Bowmanville on Friday November 11th from 7-9 p.m. Masonic Service in the Morris Chapel on Friday November 11 at 6:45 p.m. Funeral service at Orono United Church on Saturday November 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Donations in Klaas’s memory to Orono United Church or the Parkinson’s Society would be gratefully appreciated.
