I Was Your Babysitter
When Dr. and Mrs. Sylvester settled in my home town of Bowmanville, I was just 13 years old. I met them at my church, Trinity United. I babysat Donald, Steven, David, Gordon and Verity during my high school years. I remember making the special formula because the baby was allergic to cow's milk. I loved children. I grew up in a large family in Bowmanville, so I was often feeding and bathing the Sylvester children. One summer, I went with Dr. & Mrs. Sylvester to the family cottage in Lake Muskoka. I was 14. I was there to help Martha with the children at her parents' cottage on an island near Bala. It was such a wonderful experience for a young girl. Mrs. Sylvester was a wonderful mentor to me. I loved being with them and the children. After finishing high school, I went away to Toronto Teachers' College and became a grade one teacher in Scarborough, met my husband and raised two amazing children. My daughter is a teacher and my son is a doctor.
I saw Dr. and Mrs. Sylvester years later in the restaurant in Bowmanville. It was so good to see them that day but I never saw them again. I would go to the Apple Festival every October with my husband and daughter and grandsons but I never saw them there. Just recently I met someone from Bowmanville and I asked about the Sylvesters and this quilter said that Martha had passed away. She was such a loving lady. I still have the bracelet that they gave me for my 16th birthday on Christmas Day. I am so sorry that your Mom is not with you anymore. Your Dad became my physician during my early years. CLW
