Esther Clare (Wallace) Allin, beloved wife of the late Robert George Allin, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 13, 2016.
Born September 4, 1927, on her family’s farm in Iroquois, Ontario, Esther was the second child (older sister, Lenore, predeceased her in 2010) of Maurice and Mary Wallace.
A graduate of Queen’s University, Esther began her teaching career at Cloverdale School in Dundas County and continued at Lockhart Public School in Newcastle where she met Bob, the love of her life, whom she married in 1955.
In addition to being a partner with her husband on their farm in Newcastle, Esther continued in her father’s tradition as a poultry fancier - on her own and with Bob. She showed exhibition poultry and won many prizes, including grand championships at the Ontario Royal Winter Fair.
A nature preservation and conservation champion, she was an ardent birder and participated in many bird censuses and enjoyed, more than anything, walking in the woods and other places where birds of all varieties live. Esther and Bob were instrumental in saving the Oshawa Second Marsh and Thickson’s Woods.
Esther also loved literature and poetry. She was an avid reader and wrote many poems herself. In addition, she also wrote for and edited the “Plume” poultry annual publication (started and published by her father).
A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, Esther is survived by her three children, Mary Allin (Sal Taylor), Maurice Allin (Stephanie True) and Anne Allin Hemsley (Ross Hemsley) and her cherished grandchildren, Morgan Swerdfeger (Brian), Jerushia Allin and Verdon and Max Hemsley. She was also blessed with four loving great-grandchildren, Jarrett, Rachel, Jessica and Nolan Swerdfeger. Her large extended family on the Allin side will miss her deeply.
