About Funeral Prearrangements
Many people today prepare themselves in advance for a variety of events that may or may not occur, by purchasing items such as auto, home, or health insurance. They also invest in pension plans to provide for future security. Prearranging your funeral is another part of estate planning that makes sense. In most cases, the will is not read until after the funeral, causing personal preferences to be overlooked at the time of the funeral.
The worst time to plan a funeral is after the death has occurred. The prearranged or preplanned funeral is an opportunity for an individual to carefully plan the type of services he or she prefers and outline instructions for final arrangements and an orderly conclusion to life. When a funeral is prearranged it allows for the individual to personalize their specific funeral requests and wishes. Arrangements may be completed in either the comfort of your home or at the funeral chapel.
One of the many advantages to prearranging a funeral is the opportunity it provides to make decisions in a less emotional setting, sparing the family the burden of making funeral arrangements at a time when they are overwhelmed with grief. It is a time when options and personal preferences may be discussed with family members and recorded on the prearrangement file.
The prearrangement is also a time to record the necessary information for the various legal forms and certificates. We have included forms on the last page of this booklet for personal information required by the funeral director and government. The information is necessary to register a death with provincial and federal governments and obtain a burial permit which is kept on record at the cemetery or crematorium.
Once the information and preferred service have been determined, then the casket, burial vault or urn may be selected. This also provides you with the present cost of the prearrangement.
The Morris Funeral Chapel believes that making prearrangements is as important as having power of attorney appointed and making your last will and testament.
